Hamilton police say they are listening to the concerns of residents, and are expanding patrol in the city’s downtown core.
“Core Patrol” is a team of officers assigned to downtown Hamilton and surrounding neighbourhoods.
On Thursday, Hamilton officials announced the operation would be increased by four members, to include six officers in total.
Patrol officers will engage with businesses and people, and address crime unfolding in the area.
In addition to adding new uniformed officials, police are initiating a trial using the “Remotely Piloted Aircraft System” to speed up dispatch and arrival times of officers when needed.
In a statement, officials call this expansion a necessary step forward to protect the community.
“The path forward to these issues is complex but Hamilton Police Service is committed to collaborating on a downtown solution to make it a welcoming space for everyone,” Hamilton officials said.
The initiative launched back in 2023 as a pilot, and the expansion will come into effect officially on Sept. 16.
