Hamilton Police are expanding Core Patrol to address requests for an increased police presence in the downtown core.

Core Patrol is a dedicated team of officers assigned to downtown Hamilton and surrounding neighbourhoods with a focus on Wellington to Bay and Cannon to Hunter. The program was introduced as a pilot in June 2023. The officers engage with individuals and businesses, while addressing crime and disorder with a focus on improving community safety and wellbeing.

Beginning on September 16, 2024, Core Patrol will be expanding to six officers. There will be three teams, with increased coverage throughout the day and night to address the growing concerns in the downtown core.

In addition to Core Patrol, Hamilton will be initiating a trial using the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) to enhance our ability to dispatch and respond appropriately to calls for service in the downtown core. There will be no recording unless a criminal offence is committed where evidence is required.

“Expanding our Core Patrol is a crucial step in our commitment to ensuring that downtown Hamilton remains a thriving and vibrant place for everyone. By working collaboratively with our community partners, we’re focused on enhancing safety and supporting growth and vitality of our city’s core,” said Chief Frank Bergen.

In fall 2023, Hamilton Police distributed a survey to businesses with storefronts within the Core Patrol area. A total of 109 respondents completed the survey, representing a minimum of 69 unique businesses. Five themes were represented, including police presence, social disorder, physical disorder, crime and harassment. Overall, the findings of the survey point to community members generally feeling unsafe and wanting an increased police presence.

“We have empathy for those affected by addiction, mental illness and homelessness and we continue to offer support through our Social Navigator and Rapid Intervention and Support Team (RIST). Yet, we also know there is a residual effect in social disorder crimes such as open drug use, mischief to property and thefts,” said Bergen.

“The path forward to these issues is complex but Hamilton Police Service is committed to collaborating on a downtown solution to make it a welcoming space for everyone.”
