A woman and a man have been charged after their car crashed into a church in central Hamilton Monday evening.
Police say the pair was driving in a black Hyundai Sonata around 8 p.m. when it struck a sign and then smashed into Trinity Lutheran Church located at the intersection of Hughson Street North and Wilson Street.
A bystander saw the couple grabbing their belongings from the car and trying to flee the scene.
Officers say the witness followed the duo and called police to provide updates.
Investigators arrested the 35-year-old woman and 36-year-old man nearly 10 minutes later.
Both were charged with failing to stop after an accident, and the woman was also charged with impaired driving.
No injuries were reported.
