Hamilton Police have discovered a series of man-made holes and tunnels within Gage Park during a proactive encampment check.
On Tuesday December 9, 2024 Hamilton Police were proactively patrolling encampments within Gage Park when they discovered a large hole – approximately 6 feet in depth – dug into the park ground. Upon closer inspection, Police found a series of tunnels that had been carved out of the surrounding soil to allow for extension cords and other electrical wiring to connect to multiple tents in this location.
Powering all of this was a generator that had been dug into another hole and covered up for concealment. A final power cord was found to be running from the generator to a City of Hamilton light pole.
Patrol officers, in conjunction with the Hamilton Police Encampment Engagement Team, investigated the matter and determined that a lone male was responsible for the mischief to the property.
The male was located in the area and arrested after a brief foot chase. He was charged with the following:
· Mischief over $5000.00
· Fail to Comply Probation Order
· Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Fentanyl
· Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Methamphetamine
· Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Hydromorphone Dilaudid
Due to safety concerns, the remaining tents within the location were relocated and the holes have been fenced off until the city makes the necessary repairs to the ground.
