Altercation broke out prior to ‘targeted’ shooting in east Hamilton

Hamilton police are investigating a “targeted” shooting in the city’s east end.

Police say they responded to a shots fired call near Grimsby Avenue and Britannia Avenue around 4:45 p.m. on Monday after a dispute broke out between a group of people and multiple shots were fired.

No one was injured.

Officers were on scene shortly after the initial shooting, and the area was blocked off while investigators reviewed the scene and canvassed residences in the immediate neighbourhood.

Police have confirmed that several people were involved in the incident, and the circumstances leading up to the shooting are part of the ongoing investigation.

“At this time we have no known victims, there potentially is a vehicle involved as well as individuals on foot,” Const. Krista-Lee Ernst, Hamilton’s Public Information Officer said.

The shooting itself took place just steps away from a multi-use child-care centre and school, St. Helen’s Site.

“Hamilton Police are asking residents in the area to review their security surveillance cameras between the hours of 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. for any suspicious activity and to contact police,” officers said in an update Monday evening.

Alternatively, those driving in the area at the time are encouraged to review their dashcam footage.

Police say they can be reached by calling 905-546-4883.
