3 charged after thousands attend unsanctioned gathering at homecoming

Hamilton police say they have charged three people under the Nuisance Party bylaw after over 6,000 people attended a homecoming street party.

Officers say they responded to 43 calls for service to a street party in the Westdale and Ainslie Woods neighbourhoods on Saturday.

McMaster security worked alongside Hamilton Fire, paramedics and by-law officers to help keep local communities and residents safe.

Police say there were around 6,000 to 7,000 people gathered at the unsanctioned street party.

Officers say they made two arrests and issued three provincial offence notices at the gathering.

Hamilton paramedics report that they responded to 21 calls for service and 13 people were transported to hospital for public intoxication.

Krista-Lee Ernst from Hamilton Police says, “If a nuisance party is declared within the University District Safety Initiative, a first offense fine could see up to $10,000 and secondary up to $25,000.”

An unsanctioned party of larger size took place in the area in last year which attracted over 8,000 people, where police made five arrests and issued ten provincial offence notices.
