Rebuilding washroom at Hamilton’s Woodlands Park an arduous task

The City of Hamilton estimates it will take until the end of 2025 to repair the washroom at Woodlands Park.

The total cost could be upwards of $1.3 million — however, the city’s insurance deductible will leave the taxpayer paying $500,000.

The fire happened at the beginning of the year and was believed to have originated in a nearby encampment.

No one was injured.

“I still struggle with how long things take,” Ward 3 Councillor Nrinder Nann said at Monday’s Public Works Committee meeting.

“It’s June, the fire took place in January, and I think my sense is one that I share with the community. It’s hard to understand why things take so long.”

Some of the expenditures associated with the hefty $1.3 million sum will stem from inspection costs, the placement of temporary washrooms within the park grounds, site rehabilitation to meet current building codes and any structural engineering work that must be carried out.
