PIC 3 for Additional Access to Brantford-bound Hwy 403 EA

Map outlining the extended study area for the third westbound lane

The study is being carried out in accordance with Schedule ‘C’ of the Municipal Engineer’s Association MCEA (October 2000, as amended in 2023), which is an approved process under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act.

Specific goals and objectives of the study are to:

  • Determine the operational and geometric feasibility of a westbound on-ramp to Highway 403.
  • Assess the limitations and impact of the proposed ramp on Highway 403 operations and future plans.
  • Consider and assess extending a third lane (truck climbing lane) from Southcote Road to Highway 6.

To date, two PICs have been held for this study. PIC #1 was held in March 2014 to obtain public input on the problems and opportunities and the range of alternative solutions (alternative access points) being considered. Based on feedback received, the preferred solution is to improve access to Highway 403 by adding a Brantford-bound ramp from Mohawk Road. PIC #2 was held in June 2014 to present the design concepts of the proposed new ramp.

Since that time, the City has been working with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), to review the proposed Mohawk Road ramp design to further improve traffic operations by the extension of the westbound truck climbing lane to Highway 6.
Additional traffic analysis has been undertaken to demonstrate how the truck climbing lane and on-ramp will operate safely and improve traffic operations.
