What’s closed in Hamilton, Halton and Niagara on Victoria Day

Each year, Victoria Day takes place across Canada on the final Monday before May 24.

It’s a federal holiday, which means many businesses, city offices and public transportation services will undergo closures as Canadians take the day to spend time with their loved ones and, perhaps most importantly, enjoy fireworks displays later in the evening.

For a full, comprehensive list of what will be open and closed near you, keep reading.

Closed

  • Most banks and government offices;
  • All LCBO locations will be closed, with select Beer Store’s remaining open;
  • Canada Post will be closed;
  • Libraries will be closed;
  • Most grocery stores and malls will be closed, with some exceptions;
  • Recreation centres will be closed;
  • Lime Ridge Mall and Eastgate Square in Hamilton will be closed, Mapleview Mall in Burlington will be closed, while Niagara’s Outlet Collection will remain open;

Transit

The Hamilton Street Railway will operate on a Sunday schedule;

DARTS will cancel all subscription trips, except for dialysis trips. The service will itself will operate on a holiday schedule throughout the day;

Burlington Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule;

Niagara Region Transit (NRT) will reduce its hours.

In St. Catharines will run from 10:45 a.m. until 6 p.m.

In Niagara Falls, it will operate from 7:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. (WEGO runs until 11 p.m.)

In Welland, operating hours will only be between 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

NRT will not be operating any of its regional routes.

Ride Norfolk Transit will not be operating. Regular service will resume the following day.

Regionally, GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule.

Waste Collection

Hamilton will have no waste collection services operate on the holiday Monday. Pick up will take place the following day. City dumps are closed.

Throughout the Halton Region, blue and green bin collection will also take place the following day.

Across the Niagara Region, there are no changes to the curbside collection services due to the holiday. Most of the regions landfills will remain open, except for West Lincoln location which will be closed.
