Welland man faces multiple charges connected to child abuse investigation

A man from the City of Welland has been charged of multiple offences connected to a child abuse investigation that began earlier this summer.

Niagara regional police have laid ten additional charges against 39-year-old Sean M. Mezo from Welland who was arrested Aug. 29 following the alleged break-and-enter and sexual assault of a child.

Officers had opened an investigation after responding to a report of a break-and-enter at a home near Endicott terrace and Barrington Drive on Aug. 22.

While attending the home, police say they received information that a man had entered the house through a window and had interacted with a child between the ages of five to ten, before escaping on foot.

Detectives later identified and arrested Mezo Aug. 29 and charged him with sexual interference and for breaking and entering.

Police say a continued investigation into offences between May 7 and Aug. 26 have led to an additional ten charges against Mezo.

The department says that some offences involved people under the 16 years of age in the City of Welland and St. Catharines, including the Niagara Pen Centre.

Investigators have charged Mezo with additional offences including multiple counts of trespassing or prowling at night near a home, voyeurism and criminal harassment.

Mezo has been in custody since Aug. 29 and is scheduled to appear at a St. Catharines courthouse Thursday.

Police have released Mezo’s photo hoping residents can use the information to identify other potential victims or witnesses.
