Web series ‘Dear Grandpa, It’s Michael’ hones in on life with autism

A new web series focuses on breaking down barriers for those on the autism spectrum.

It’s called “Dear Grandpa, It’s Michael,” and nearly half its cast and crew are on the spectrum themselves.

Michael Whitell stars as the main character, and he says the role means more than just being on the big screen — it’s a chance to show his independence and capabilities.

The series follows Michael’s life and the challenges he faces every day.

Tyrone Greenridge, the film’s producer, says he was inspired to tell Michael’s story in a way that empowers those on the spectrum and educates the community.

“Michael basically defied all odds. He was told at two years old he wouldn’t be able to talk or have any independent life,” Greenridge said. “He actually graduated from Conestoga College this year. He’s an honours high school student, works at Terra Gardens, and has his full license.”

With over 40 percent of the cast and crew on the autism spectrum, the crew is drawn to the cause.

Anna Marie Sutherland is an actor in this series, and her son is autistic.

She says every story needs to be told, and more needs to be done to support diversity.

“I am very honoured to be here, it’s very special to be a part of it,” she says. “When I came to set and everything was happening and I saw people with autism having roles as directors and the inclusiveness, it actually made me cry.”

Once the web series wraps up, the goal is to create a feature film.

For now, the team behind the production is happy to tell Michael’s story to foster understanding and empathy for those on the autism spectrum.
