Students launch pro-Palestinian protest at McMaster University

A pro-Palestinian encampment has cropped up on the grounds of McMaster University.

The protest comes alongside a growing movement of demonstrations that have swept through university campuses nationwide.

In the last week alone, the University of Toronto, McGill University and the University of British Columbia have all been host to similarly-styled demonstrations, to name a few.

They’ve laid out several demands that circulate around the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, most of which are focused on convincing schools to divest from any Israeli companies with ties to the war and to force the schools to release public statements condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza.

In a statement on social media, one of the groups organizing the protest said it would “not stand idly by as our institution continues to stay silent, as academic institutions in Gaza are bombed, and students and teachers killed.”

McMaster President David Farrar says that the university’s role is not to constrain free thought, censor the views and positions some choose to take, or adopt the position of one group over another.

“Universities have a long history with protests, which, when peacefully done, reinforce and support our culture of freedom of expression. McMaster is committed to an environment where this can be achieved within our codes of conduct and without compromising the safety and security of students, faculty and staff.”
