Students from Niagara College unveil crucial project for World Rowing Championship

A critical piece of the World Rowing Championship has been completed.

It’s known as an “aligner hut,” and the students who helped build it were celebrating its unveiling on Tuesday.

With less than a month to go, things are ramping up in St. Catharines ahead of the major competition.

“In that hut, there will be officials who will be looking at the monitors to make sure that the boats are all lined up,” Bill Schenk, one of the events organizers, said. He says the hut is crucial to ensuring things get off to a fair start.

“They’ll have communications with the boat holders to move each in and out at the start line.”

It took a lot of public support to make this project happen.

“This required a lot of support,” Leo Tiberi, a spokesperson from the college told CHCH News. “The homebuilders [association] donated the supplies, the rowing club donated all the barges and supplies to safely get out to where we were going,” he added.

Tiberi says this was a way to move the classroom out into the real world.

Students learned how to meet deadlines, work with clients on a world-class project, and experience something that many called a life-changing experience.

“It’s truly amazing. Years from now, I can be driving down the highway and say, ‘Look, I built that,’” one student says.

The World Rowing Championships will take place at The Henley from Aug. 18 to Aug 24. For more information on the event, click here.
