Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for most of Southern Ontario, warning of an “early spring storm” that’s expected to bring strong winds and rains to the region.
A weather system known as a “Colorado low” is expected to hit the Hamilton, Halton and Niagara Region sometime early Tuesday and last until Thursday.
The weather agency said that with it will come periods of heavy wind, rain, and even a chance for some snow as temperatures drop from cool air pushing into the area.
Federal meteorologists are calling for anywhere from 25 to 50 milimetres of rainfall by Wednesday evening, with wind gusts reaching speeds of up to 80 km/h.
“This amount of rain flowing over saturated ground can cause significant runoff into local ditches, watercourses, and storm infrastructure,” said Ryan Kitchen, a flood risk management officer with the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority.
“This rain will serve to further increase water levels in our local creeks and rivers and will likely result in flooding typically experienced in low-lying, flood prone areas,” he said, adding that there is no expectation of flooding throughout the region’s watercourses at this time.
