The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing Hamilton police over a recent arrest that left a man needing to be transported to hospital with serious injuries.
Ontario’s police watchdog says that on May 16, at 10:30 a.m., two plainclothes officers travelling in an unmarked cruiser spotted a speeding vehicle heading eastbound on Barton Street.
The officers followed the car, which passed Sherman Avenue and then proceeded onto Kinrade Avenue, before it came to a stop in a parking lot at the north end of the street.
There, the officers approached the vehicle and “removed the 37-year-old male driver” while making their arrest.
The SIU describes what ensued next as a “struggle” between the officer and the man, before the officers were able to take him into custody.
Following his arrest, the man reportedly complained of being in pain and was transported to hospital where he had to be treated for “serious injuries.”
The extent of his injuries remains unknown.
Now, the investigative body is seeking witnesses. Anyone who may have watched this incident unfold is asked to contact the SIU by phoning 1-800-787-8529.
