Serious hit-and-run in Long Point sends cyclist to hospital

A cyclist suffered serious life-threatening injuries after a hit-and-run on Erie Boulevard in Norfolk county Saturday night.

First responders say they responded to a crash at around 9 p.m. at Erie Boulevard involving a cyclist and a vehicle.

Officers discovered that a cyclist was travelling along Erie Boulevard when they were hit by a black 2020 Hyundai Elantra sedan.

The cyclist was transported to hospital before being transferred to a trauma centre for further treatment.

Hamilton police later located the sedan and took the driver into custody.

Police have charged 19-year-old David Rayner from Dundas for failing to stop at an accident resulting in bodily harm and for dangerous operation causing bodily harm.

Rayner is scheduled to appear at a bail hearing at the courthouse in Simcoe at a future date.

A portion of Erie Boulevard was closed for several hours before reopening.
