Regional coroner announces inquests into 6 deaths in Niagara Region

The West Region supervising coroner announced inquests into the deaths of six people held in custody in the Niagara region on Thursday.

Dr. Karen Schiff, the coroner overseeing West Region, Hamilton Office will be overseeing the inquests held looking into the deaths of:

  • Timothy Anderson who died at age 42 on Dec. 19, 2020.
  • Murray Balogh who died at age 20 on Feb. 23, 2022.
  • Jordan Case who died at age 22 on Dec. 1, 2018.
  • David Cowe who died at age 32 on Jan. 11, 2018.
  • Michael Croft who died at age 38 on July 25, 2020.
  • Jahrell Lungs who died at age 26 on Aug. 1, 2021.

The office of the Solicitor General says each death happened while they were in custody at the Niagara Detention Centre in Thorold or after they were transferred to the Greater Niagara Hospital.

The ministry says inquests into their deaths are mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The office says more details surrounding the inquests including date and venue will be provided at a later date.
