Province to pull liquor license at Club 33 in Hamilton

Club 33, a bar in downtown Hamilton, has landed itself in the sights of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

The crown agency says the club has repeatedly violated the Liquour License and Control Act and it is taking the necessary steps to revoke the establishment’s license.

In its report, the AGCO notes a number of offences it says took place during several inspections over the last year.

Some of the infractions listed by the provincial regulator include cases of patrons serving themselves from the bar, the establishment serving alcohol after hours, fire exits being blocked and management impeding AGCO inspections with false information.

As a result, the AGCO says its moving to revoke Club 33’s liquor license in an effort to “protect the public’s safety.”

“All liquor licence holders in Ontario are required to operate with honesty and integrity and in a way that doesn’t endanger their patrons or the community around them,” Dr. Karin Schnarr, the AGCO’s CEO, said.

“When an establishment is unable or unwilling to meet its obligations, the AGCO will take the necessary steps to protect the public.”

The owners of Club 33 are entitled to an opportunity to appeal the decision through a tribunal.

CHCH News has contacted the establishment to comment on the AGCO’s allegations but has not heard back at this time.

In February, the establishment was the scene of an early morning shooting that hospitalized a man.

Police at the time said they were called out to the area shortly after 2:30 a.m. and found the man inside the bar with gunshot wounds, but to date have not released any further details surrounding the incident.
