On Saturday, a crowd gathered on Locke Street to voice their opposition to the Royal Bank of Canada’s funding of fossil fuel projects.
The protest is part of the second annual “Fossil Fools Day,” a nationwide effort to raise awareness of RBC’s alleged funding of pollution ahead of the bank’s upcoming annual general meeting on April 11th.
The demonstrators say that, in 2022 alone, RBC funneled $38 billion into funding fossil fuel creators, claiming that makes the Canadian bank the second-largest funder of fossil fuels in the world.
Sheila Van Leusden, the organizer of Leadnow says, “Our group, who has organized these rallies, almost 40 right across the country, is a group who hopes to create a just and sustainable, equitable society.”
The group is also supporting the Wet’suwet’en people in British Columbia, to prevent the construction of the coastal gas-link pipeline.
