Police seek person in connection to Waterdown home explosion

A grainy image of a person walking along Highway 6 may hold a clue as to why a home in Waterdown exploded.

In April, a fire broke out at a home at 659 Hwy 6. At the time, authorities hypothesized that an explosion had occurred inside of it before it became a fully-involved fire.

Crews were called out to the scene shortly before 7 a.m. No one was injured, but the house itself sustained an estimated $1 million in damages.

The fire prompted officials to contact Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal and no explanation was ever given as for its cause.

An update on Tuesday marked the first development in the matter since the initial fire took place.

A photo released by Hamilton police came with little explanation beyond authorities describing the dark figure in it as an “individual matching the description provided.”

Police say they were spotted heading southbound down Highway 6 on April 19, during the “critical timeframe” after the fire had broken out.

Authorities describe the person as having a medium build and dressed in dark attire.

They wore white gloves, had a black backpack with a logo at its centre, and were carrying a white bag.

Investigators are pleading with the public for more information and asking anyone who feels that they may have information that could assist with the case to contact Detective Greg Blunsdon by phone at 905-540-5085.
