Police probe threatening voicemail left at Fort Erie school that prompted evacuation

Niagara police say a voicemail that prompted an evacuation at an elementary school in Fort Erie was nothing more than an “unfounded” threat.

On Wednesday morning, St. Philomena Catholic Elementary School students were evacuated from the facility and taken to a safe location following an “unknown safety concern.”

By 11 a.m. detectives from the Niagara police department had investigated the matter and determined that it was safe for the students and staff to return to the premises.

They say the decision to evacuate was taken out of an abundance of caution over a threatening message that was left on an answering machine the night prior.

Police have not disclosed the nature of the threat but have confirmed that it was directed at the school itself and deemed it to be “unfounded.”

Anyone with additional information about this incident is asked to contact Niagara police by calling 905-688-4111, option three, extension 1002200.
