Police investigate after employee of Niagara daycare chokes a child

An employee at a Way to Grow Childcare in Niagara Falls has been charged Tuesday afternoon with aggravated assault of a child.

Niagara regional police began an investigation into an assault at the Way to Grow Daycare at 6071 Valley Way in the city of Niagara Falls last Friday involving a child attending the daycare.

Investigators learned that a 26-year old man who worked at the daycare allegedly choked and assaulted a child younger than 5-years-old.

Officers arrested Matthew Maxwell of St. Catharines Tuesday at around 3:40 p.m. and is being charged with aggravated assault.

Maxwell is being held in custody pending a bail hearing on Wednesday at a St. Catharines courthouse.

Detectives say Maxwell was employed at Niagara Nursery School & Child Care Centre in Niagara-on-the-Lake and have reason to believe there may be more victims.
