A pet cat is dead following a house fire in Beamsville, Ont., on Monday morning.
Nearly 30 firefighters in seven trucks responded shortly before 10:30 a.m. to a report of smoke coming from a home on Dennis Avenue.
Niagara West Fire Chief Greg Hudson says crews discovered the fire in the basement, which spread to the first and second floors.
No one was home at the time of the fire.

One firefighter suffered minor heat exhaustion but was cleared to return to work after paramedics assessed them.
Residents of neighbouring houses had to evacuate as a precaution. Hudson says they have since returned to their homes.
The fire was brought under control around noon.
Fire crews remain at the scene to investigate the cause of the blaze.
An estimated cost of damages has yet to have been determined.
