Ontario Land Tribunal rules developer can build homes on Burlington golf course

The Ontario Land Tribunal has ruled in favour of a Burlington development company that wants to redevelop part of the Millcroft Golf Club into a community.

The ruling, released Wednesday, will permit the company to move forward with its plans to build 90 single-family homes and 130 condo units in the area.

The developer says the single-family homes will replicate those seen in the current community.

However, the City of Burlington says its plans don’t align with its current housing strategy and calls the decision “disappointing.”

In a statement released Thursday, the city said that while addressing the housing demands is important, this project fails todo so in a manner that aligns with its its housing strategy.

“This is not the right place for development,” Mayor Marianne Meed Ward told CHCH News on Friday.

“We don’t need these houses to meet our housing targets, they won’t be affordable and they eat into very important greenspace that the community uses year-round.”

At previous council meetings, concerns were raised about increased traffic, strain on infrastructure, and other potential negative impacts the development could have on the local ecosystems.

Historically, many homes in the Millcroft neighbourhood have an average selling price of around $2 million.

“We’re very consistent with our message,” Meed said. “There was one part of this development we didn’t oppose, and that was the apartment up on Dundas.”

She says that the city will support development where it belongs but will fight it where it doesn’t.
