Niagara police arrest burglar who had to stop to charge e-bike while fleeing

A Port Colborne man who had to pull over and charge his e-bike while fleeing the scene of his crimes is now the one who is facing charges.

Niagara Police say a man who was breaking into seasonal homes in Wainfleet has been arrested.

On Saturday, police were called to a break-and-enter near Rathfon Road and Lakeshore Road.

Officers say they arrived shortly after 7 p.m. and were able to determine that several seasonal properties in the area had been broken into and had property stolen from them.

Two hours later, they received a call about a suspicious person near Highway 3 and Rathfon Road.

There, they found a man charging his e-bike — along with the stolen items from the aforementioned homes.

Police say that the man’s battery ran out of juice while he was attempting to flee the scene.

Christopher Airhardt, 41, of Port Colborne, now faces six burglary-related charges. He is being held in custody and is scheduled to have a bail hearing on April 22.
