A long-time Niagara Falls city councillor and former mayor has stepped down from public office after more than five decades.
Mayor Jim Diodati announced during Tuesday night’s city council meeting that Wayne Thomson had resigned from city council effective immediately.
Thomson himself was not in attendance for the meeting and no reason was given.
The 85-year-old was first elected mayor in 1978 through to 1983 and again in 1991 until 2003. He has served as a city councillor since 2010.
Council waived procedure to declare the seat vacant and approved the filling of the vacancy by appointment, suggesting to ask the first runner up in the last election, Chris Dabrowski, to fill the term.
