Over 60 years ago, Lakeland Kartway opened its gates to the public on Hamilton’s Beach Strip.
Today was supposed to be the last official day, but some last-minute developments could keep the karts racing for longer.
Lakeland Kartway in Confederation Beach Park in Hamilton was set to go out with a bang this afternoon.
Staff were there early to set up the goodbye party and to fix the karts one last time.
This was the last official day to ride one of the carts down by the beach, but they are pushing for an extension on their lease.
Vincent Firmi is the owner of Lakeland Kartway. He said he was hopeful but has already begun looking for a new space.
His wish might just come true.
CHCH News spoke with Ward 5 Councillor Matt Francis late this afternoon. He says the master plan for this space was put together back in 2010 to turn it into a naturalized space.
Matt Francis said, “The master plan calls for this to be actualized as green space, but the owners of the go-karts reached out to my office on Thursday, and I immediately put them in touch with the city staff in the real estate department. They will sit down with them and try to negotiate.”
We reached out to the owner of Lakeland Kartway again to let him know a meeting with the city real estate board might just save his space. He is very excited and happy about this new development and will begin working on his proposal.
