Jury deliberations begin in Karafa, Li murder trial

A jury tasked to decide the fate of Oliver Karafa and Lucy Li have begun deliberations Thursday after hearing testimonies and examinations of the first degree murder charges they face.

Following the closing statements this week, what we do know is that Karafa’s lawyer wants the jury’s verdict to be second degree murder, not first against their client because they believe the killing wasn’t pre-meditated.

The bigger question remains will the jury decide whether they find Li guilty of first degree murder or not?

In Feb. 2021 Tyler Pratt, 39, and his pregnant girlfriend, Jordyn Romano were shot at an industrial property on Stoney Creek over an alleged business conflict. Karafa’s lawyer admitted that his client “pulled the trigger,” which ended up killing Pratt.

Romano survived but her unborn baby didn’t.

Li’s lawyer maintains their client didn’t know about Karafa’s alleged business dealings or if he was going to carry out the shooting. The Crown suggested Li told an elaborate set of lies “designed to create space between her and a motive to kill.” And that both should face charges in the first degree.

The deliberation period for the jury will run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, including weekends until the jury reaches a verdict.
