A very unusual, toxic worm species has been spotted in Hamilton.
They’re known as hammerhead worms, an invasive species originating from Asia, and can be recognized by their unique broad heads.
The flat-faced planarian primarily feeds on other earthworms and mollusks and has no known predators except for other hammerheads due to a potent neurotoxin they secrete from their bodies.
It’s known as tetrodotoxin and can be deadly for some small animals. People who handle them can expect to break out in a bad, irritating rash.
Sightings have been reported in several cities across Southern Ontario, including Kitchener and Newmarket.
Once fully grown, the worms can get to be up to nearly a metre in length.
Anyone who comes across one of these invasive worms is encouraged by Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to make an online report.
