Horror display in Welland draws Halloween fans

The Annual Spooky Awards in Niagara Falls feature 60 homes entered in the Halloween decorating contest.

However, one Niagara resident, who is scary good at decorating, wishes the event would spread throughout the entire Niagara region.

More than 60 homes in Niagara Falls will be ranked in three categories: Judge’s Favorite, Best Effects, and People’s Choice.

Frank Popp Jr. says, “The cool thing about the Spooky Awards is they map out every house. You can go online and see where they are. In Welland, we don’t have that, so you don’t know where the houses are; you just happen to drive by. It would be cool if Welland had something like that. I know I’d enter my house for sure.”

Frank Popp Jr.’s haunting masterpiece on McAlpine Avenue South in Welland isn’t part of the competition, but that didn’t scare him away from going all out this year.

Popp Jr. remembers decorating for Halloween with his father and wants to pass that excitement down to his daughters.

While he won’t be up for any awards this Halloween, he says the reaction from people walking by is worth it.
