Hamilton residents unite to rescue neighbourhood cat from tree

It’s a story you usually hear about in movies. A local Hamilton cat, Sylvester, was saved from a tall tree after his owner said he was stuck up there for nearly five days.

Antonio Pacheco says he’s unsure how his cat ended up in this tree on Woodman Drive South, but he has a hunch.

“I know there were a couple of coyotes around, and, I think they chased him for sure,” said Pacheco.

Neighbours surrounded the tree on Sunday attempting to save Sylvester.

“Some kids were trying to climb the tree like he’s a neighbourhood cat, they all love him, you know.”

Pacheco says he had been trying to save Sylvester for days and had a hard time finding help.

“I called every fire department, I called SPCA, the government line. I don’t know how many calls I did but nobody cared,” said Pacheco.

That was until one local arborist did.

Embarking on his first-ever cat rescue, Thomas Borer of Borer’s Falls Tree Service scaled the tree.

“Not really my forte but I thought I’d come out and lend a helping hand generally when we’re removing a tree or trimming it, it doesn’t hiss at ya,” said Borer.

Borer attempted to lure Sylvester to him with the help of nearby neighbors and blankets.

“Luckily enough he came back to me, and I just grabbed him and threw him in the cat carrier I had from one of the neighbours I guess,” recalled Borer.

“You know I’m grateful for the neighbourhood here, it’s a really nice neighbourhood and the people,” says Pacheco.

As for Sylvester, it looks like he’s going to be an inside cat from now on.
