Hamilton police investigate Gibson neighbourhood shooting

There have now been over 40 shootings in Hamilton this year.

At 7 p.m. on Saturday, the city’s police department received multiple reports of gunfire near Sanford Avenue North and King Street.

Authorities quickly arrived on scene and taped off an area of Sanford Avenue, between Aikman Avenue and King Street.

For several hours, foot patrols and canine units probed the surrounding area, speaking with witnesses and searching for evidence.

Investigators say that the preliminary information they gathered suggests that three men were involved and no one was injured.

Police add that all three of the suspects fled the scene on foot.

“I was outside smoking a cigarette …  I just heard a couple of gunshots pop off — about four or five — it wasn’t too loud but it was pretty close to where I am,” Paulo Michniewicz, a nearby resident, says. “It’s a pretty scary situation.”

No suspect details have been released at this time but police believe that this was a targeted incident.

The department says its Shooting Response Team has taken over the investigation and is appealing to the community for assistance.

“Your cooperation is crucial in helping us resolve this case,” Hamilton police wrote in an online update shortly after the incident.

Anyone with information on the matter is asked to contact Det. Matt Dugdale at 905-546-4833.
