Hamilton courthouse closes, federal office cites ‘security concerns’

A federal courthouse is leaving Hamilton due to “security concerns.”

The Tax Court of Canada announced it has closed its Jackson Street West location.

The federal agency said in a statement the decision to close comes amid heightened concerns for safety.

“As a result of the ongoing security concerns for the public, employees, and members of the court, the Tax Court of Canada has made the decision to cease its operations at its current Hamilton location.”

This is not the first time the agency has expressed concern over its location in Hamilton.

Back in September of 2023, the tax court released a memo stating the building would be temporarily closed, without citing a reason.

Later on, when the expected reopening date was pushed back, another release went out saying “the Hamilton location will not reopen until the Chief Justice is satisfied that no further safety concerns exist.”

The agency acknowledged the inconveniences and delays this closure will cause.

“The Tax Court of Canada has requested that the relocation process be accelerated.”

The building is closed effective immediately.
