Members of McMaster University’s Department of Surgery are shining a spotlight on artistry through a new installation on campus.
The Creative Collective Gallery, which is being housed in the Institute of Applied Health Sciences, holds a diverse range of art forms that department members created.
Paintings, photography, poetry and dance choreography are all elements included in the exhibit.
Dr. Mohit Bhandari, chair of the Department of Surgery, is one of many creators contributing to the art show.
Dr. Bhandari says the inspiration for the collective came from a desire to have creativity in the workplace, which he says allows people to feel more fulfilled by their job.
This initiative comes as McMaster researchers continue to study the relationship between divergent thinking and creative ability in surgeons.
In a study published in April 2023, researchers with the university said the field of creativity was “severely under investigated in the context of surgery,” and understanding this relationship better could aid in the training of future surgeons.
