Family traumatized following hit-and-run in Hamilton

The victim of a hit-and-run in downtown Hamilton on Wednesday says the incident has left her family traumatized.

Hamilton police are searching for the suspect and are investigating if the car was used in a robbery before the crash.

A father was driving with his two children when they saw their mother driving ahead in her black Dodge Caravan get hit from the side.

Police say the crash happened shortly before 11 a.m. on Wednesday. 

“Through investigation, it was learned that a black Dodge Caravan was travelling southbound on MacNab Street North and was struck by a vehicle in the intersection of Murray Street. The other vehicle involved fled the scene and is believed to be a blue or turquoise-coloured Acura SUV,” said Const. Indy Bharaj from the Hamilton Police Service.

Residents in the area shared surveillance footage of a light blue SUV speeding through multiple stop signs around the same time of the crash.

Despite the 40 km/h posted speed limit, police say the driver quickly fled the area after an alleged robbery.

“Hamilton police are also investigating reports that the driver of the suspect vehicle may have been involved in a robbery prior to the collision in where a female was threatened with a knife and had her belongings stolen from her,” said Const. Bharaj.

The crash victim wouldn’t speak on camera due to safety reasons, but she says her family is still recovering from this traumatic experience.

She says her face is bruised and her back is sore. 

The black Dodge Caravan sustained substantial damage to the driver side of the vehicle resulting in the driver having to be extracted and transported to hospital in stable condition. 

Moments after the crash, emergency crews were on the scene and deflating the airbag to set the female victim free. 

Police are still investigating this incident, anyone with information is asked to call them.
