Family demanding answers a month after St. Catharines death

Family and friends are still demanding answers from police after a man who went missing was found dead in a St. Catharines house last month.

On March 9, Jonathan Cronkwright was found dead in the St. Catharines house on Raymond Street.

Cronkwright’s family members told CHCH they are upset because they feel like Niagara police haven’t made much progress in this case.

32-year-old Jonathon Cronkwright’s sister Ashley Cronkwright says the family has not yet received the closure they need to grieve.

“How are we supposed to start grieving or even process the fact that my brother is gone when there are so many unanswered questions,” says Ashley.

Niagara police have not laid any charges in connection to his death and the community is demanding for more to be done.

“Why are you treating my brother the same way they did, like garbage.”

Jonathan went missing on February 29th. A search group was led by his friends and family, and just over a week later they found Jonathan dead.

Ashley says the community has done more investigating than the police.

She says they had notified police about this home while Jonathan was missing, but no searches were initiated.

“Why did you guys not come and knock at this door? You could’ve simply pulled up and knocked at the door and you couldn’t even do that and why not, why can’t you answer the question for us,” says Ashley.

Jonathan’s girlfriend, Brandi Johnson, says they’ve given the police evidence, but nothing is being done about it.

“How am I supposed to tell my nieces and nephews that if there is a problem to call 911 when I can’t promise that they will protect and serve them anymore,” says Johnson.

One of Jonathan’s longtime friends, Cathleen Carson-Shawanda, says the police aren’t sharing any information with them about the investigation.

“Honestly we’re nowhere, we’re exactly at the same spot that we’ve been at for the past month,” says Cathleen.

Carson-Shawanda reached out to St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe, and the police chief, hoping more can be done.

“We’ve got to make a stand for the community and show them that you’re going to be here for the community that you serve.”

CHCH has reached out to Niagara police, they say “We do believe that there are persons who have information who have not yet spoken with detectives and we ask that they reach out to investigators.”
