Emotional victim impact statements read in Tommy Hoang homicide trial

It was an emotional day in a Hamilton court on Friday, as victim impact statements were read in the Tommy Hoang homicide case.

Hoang was brutally murdered in February 2021.

There were over a dozen impact statements from Hoang’s family Apr. 5. Hoang’s sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and the mother of his daughter all spoke.

There were a lot of tears in court as they spoke about Hoang. They describe him as a family man who loved to laugh, give big hugs and tell silly jokes. They also spoke about his daughter who will now have to grow up without a dad.

On Feb. 10, 2021, Hoang was attacked inside a bachelor apartment on Main East in Hamilton. There were signs he had been tortured. Reports say he was brutally attacked and forced to stay inside by two suspects while another two suspects stole his car.

Hoang’s then-girlfriend, Madeleine Peternel along with Robyn Cove and Daniel Holland have all pleaded guilty to manslaughter while Jason Long has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

All of the aggressors were released on bail while they wait for their sentencing.

In court Friday, the mother of Tommy’s daughter said, “every day I wake up with the crushing reality.” Our daughter “was robbed of the guidance and support of a two-parent family,” she also said, “I have a little girl now who will grow up without a father.”

One of Hoang’s sisters also gave an impact statement she said in court, “these monsters not only took my brother’s life but also torched my family’s life.”

“I am angry that a plan to rob Tommy resulted in his death, my brother had his life taken away.”

Hoang’s family described him as a family man who always brought a lot of energy and life to every event.

All four of the people who have pled guilty in this case will be sentenced separately over the coming weeks.
