The City of Burlington is hosting its annual Spring Tree Giveaway again.
This year’s lineup of native trees includes Red Elm, Black Cherry, White Pine, Ohio Buckeye and Hackberry.
To be eligible for a free tree, you must be a resident of Burlington and register online.
There is a maximum of one tree per household, and they can only be picked up on April 27.
There are 500 trees being given away.
After the scheduled pickup times from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the remainder of the trees will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pickup is at the Roads, Parks and Forestry Yard parking lot at 897 Cumberland Ave.
It’s important you do research on which tree will best suit your property prior to pickup.
The type of soil on your property can also make a big difference in the long-term health of your tree. The Government of Ontario has a handy Tree Atlas that covers native species throughout different regions of the province (northwest, northeast, southcentral, southwest, and southeast) and their preferred microsite.

The City of Burlington says the tree it’s giving away will be between 40 and 100 centimetres in size and will come in a 3-gallon pot, so residents should be prepared upon their arrival by having adequate room in their vehicle.
Last year, the city gave away Flowering Dogwood’s, American Beech’s, Bitternut Hickory’s, Red Pines and Canada Plum’s.
The giveaway is part of an ongoing initiative in the city to achieve a 35 per cent tree canopy coverage by 2041.
