Changes announced for Hamilton’s 131st Around the Bay Race

Hamilton’s annual 30K marathon will actually be 30K next year as the race changes venues to Liuna Station.

Anna Lewis, race director of the Around the Bay Road Race, announced Monday that the venue at 360 James St. North will be the start and finish line for the marathon.

The Around the Bay Road Race is scheduled for March 30, 2025.

This year’s race was hosted at Tim Hortons Field, which made the overall route 34 km long, with markers at the 30th.

The big marathon will start at the corner of James and Simcoe streets and head north to follow the traditional race route. At the 26K mark on York Boulevard, runners will then follow Rolph Gate into Dundurn Castle before heading back to Liuna Station.

The 10K and 15K races will have runners ride shuttle busses to the marked starting lines along this course.

Participants for the 10K race will start at the north side of the lift bridge, while the 15K runners will begin near LaSalle Park in Burlington.

Both races will follow the same track outlined for the 30K race and finish at Liuna Station.

The 5K race will start at the corner of James and Simcoe streets and follow the 30K route in reverse in an “out-the-back” fashion. Participants will turn around at Dundurn Castle and return to finish at the station parking lot.

In a statement released after the announcement, Lewis says that the the move to the building that was formerly the Hamilton Railway Station is “the perfect partnership” with CN – the race’s presenting sponsor.

“We’re grateful to have the opportunity to expand our longstanding relationship and bring the Bay Race back to the downtown core,” reads the statement.

Registration for next year’s race will open next Monday online here, with past participants and subscribers expecting to receive advanced access 24 hours before opening to the public.

The media release reads that last year’s 30K marathon event sold out within a month, and Lewis says it will likely happen again this year.

Here are the capacity limits for each distance in the 2025 event with an overall total of 8,500 participants for the day:

    • 30K will have a max of 4,500 participants.
    • 15K will have a max of 1,250 participants.
    • 10K will have a max of 1,250 participants.
    • 5K will have a max of 1,500 participants.

The money raised through the race will continue to support Hamilton’s hospital’s robotic surgery program.
