The Stanley Cup has made its second trip to town following the Florida Panther’s 2024 season win.
On Monday, it was Carter Verhaeghe, the teams left-winger who stopped by the Harry Howell arena to show off the cup for friends, family and fans — with a lineup that wrapped the building.
“They all have different reactions,” Verhaeghe said. “Some of them can’t speak because they are so star struck from the cup. Some of them grab it, it’s awesome. It’s what it’s all about.”
Formerly a Niagara Ice Dogs Captain, Verhaeghe brought the Stanley Cup home to Waterdown for the second time in his NHL career.
The first was with the Tampa Bay lightning in 2020, and now a second championship win under his belt, he has advice for those looking to follow in his footsteps.
“It’s obviously really tough to get to this point. I think the biggest thing for me was ‘never give up.’ That’s kinda what got me here,” he said.
Verhaeghe’s father, Thomas, said he can’t believe how proud he is of his son.
“All the hard work he’s put in over the years. You know what? It’s a roller coaster ride up and down. He persevered through some tough times and he finally made it. To win the cup is something so special,” he said, adding that it’s an experience he can’t describe.
