Burlington childcare centre closes rooms indefinitely, citing flood damage

Three daycare rooms have been closed indefinitely at the Burlington Woodland Childcare Centre after a flood back in July damaged the centre.

Parents say they received a message on Friday from the centre that the rooms were being closed for renovations on Saturday.

The centre allegedly said that the rooms were closed for repair but did not disclose any timeline for when construction would start or finish.

Residents say there has been a severe lack of communication that the centre was significantly damaged after the flood. They allege that there was very visible damage to the floors and walls, with a high possibility of mold on the premises.

“This is extreme negligence of the staff of Woodland to leave children for a month in these rooms with mold and to have zero communication to the parents until the health department needs to come in and close it down – it’s very upsetting and concerning,” said Melissa Hadaway.

Hadaway says that there has been no communication about reimbursed daycare fees or if a recent Health Canada inspection was the reason for the rooms’ closure.

The Ontario Ministry of Education reports the latest childcare centre inspection was held in June. That inspection flagged nutrition and staff qualifications infractions – both high risk violations – which have since been resolved.

A group of concerned parents originally planned to protest at the centre Monday morning.
