Blue-green algae closes Hamilton’s Pier 4 Park beach

Health officials say toxin-producing blue-green algae has been confirmed to be in the waters of Hamilton’s Pier 4 Park beach.

In a statement issued Thursday, Hamilton Public Health Services says the beach will be closed until the blue-green algae subsides.

Updates will be provided as public health officials monitor the situation and gather samples of the water.

People and their pets are advised to avoid all contact with the water along Pier 4 Park’s shorelines and to not swim or wade in any areas where blue-green algae is visible.

Anyone that comes in contact with the water should wash themselves off with clean water as soon as possible.

Hamilton Public Health says the city’s drinking water is unaffected by the algae.

This algae often forms in shallow, slow-moving and warm waters, and often blooms until late November or early December.

The water quality and status of Hamilton’s beaches can be found on the city’s official website.
