Ayr residents cleaning up damage left by tornado

Some Ayr, Ontario residents spent the day cleaning up their yards after a tornado ripped through the small community, damaging some homes and a business.

Kelly Bebenek says her house was hit hard. “We’ve lost two new windows, probably three or four doors that were also put in on Friday. We lost part of our roof and our daughter’s bedroom is going to be gutted.”

Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Bebenek says the support of her community has been great.

“I could actually get choked up right now because of just all the messages of people offering to help. I’m not good at asking for help, and people are just showing up in our front yard. It’s been amazing.”

Another resident who was helping his parents clean their backyard says he was playing video games when the tornado hit.

“It was a crazy day. I don’t think I’ve ever had or experienced something like that happen in my life.”

Home Hardware which is down the street is temporarily closed after the twister ripped off its roof.

Residents in the area say it is going to be at least another week before things get back to normal in this town of about 4,000 people.
