ATU showcases proposed bus design to enhance transit safety

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) is showcasing its latest bus design, with the goal of lowering the risk of transit assaults.

The proposed blueprint, which is part of the ATU’s Bus Design Innovation Program, includes upgrades to security cameras on board, added partitions for operators, and better visual systems for blind spots.

ATU International President, John Costa, says the enhanced bus layout has been in the works for years.

Costa told CHCH News he drew inspiration for the new design from public busses he saw in Europe, which featured automatic partition screens around the driver for safety.

At Thursday’s showcase, ATU conducted user tests on the new design plans.

Costa says while there is still progress to be made before these new busses are implemented in the transit system, the feedback from users at the event was incredibly helpful.
