At least 10 seniors scammed for money, Halton police investigate

Police say current and prospective residents of a Burlington senior home have allegedly fallen victim to a renter scam.

Halton police say seniors living in the Palmer Place Seniors Residence are being contacted by fraudsters via email, and asked to pay rent through e-transfer.

In the case of future residents, they are being told a unit has become available, and are asked to transfer a cash payment for rent up front.

Officials say they have confirmed with Palmer Place that these emails are fraudulent, and that any current or potential tenants would not be asked to pay rent through e-transfer.

Police are aware of 10 people who have been targeted at the Burlington senior home, but believe there may be additional victims at other homes.

In a release, Halton officials say they “would like to remind residents to exercise extreme caution when receiving unsolicited emails requesting cash or personal information and conduct due diligence prior to responding.”

Anyone with information about this scam is asked to contact police at 905-825-4777 ext. 2316.
