68-year-old man dies of injuries after assault in St. Catharines

A 68-year-old man who was assaulted in St. Catharines in August has died from serious injuries while in hospital.

Niagara regional police responded to a welfare check on August 10, to the area of Merritt Street and Townline Road East where they found an injured man.

Officers allege that the man was assaulted after encountering a group of four men. Police were told that after the man met with the group, one man from the group approached him and repeatedly struck him.

Emergency crews sent the man to hospital to treat his serious injuries but later died on Aug. 27.

Detectives arrested 34-year-old Raymond Douglas Warner with no fixed address on Aug. 20, in St. Catharines in connection to the assault.

Warner was initially charged with aggravated assault, but after the death of the older man, Warner’s charge was upgraded to second degree murder.

Warner appeared at a courthouse in St. Catharines on Wednesday and was remanded into custody.
