541 Eatery and Exchange celebrates 10 years of pay-it-forward meals

A non-profit on Barton Street East in Hamilton celebrated 10 years of being in business on Saturday.

The 541 Eatery and Exchange is not only a place to grab a meal, but also a place to pay it forward.

When anyone comes into 541, they can purchase something off the menu. If they want, they can add any amount to their bill to pay it forward to someone else.

“We keep our prices affordable on our menu so that people can come in and add $10-20 to their bill that’s it that gets converted into an alternative currency “buttons” and anybody who comes into the restaurant can use,” says volunteer Justin Eisinga.

Over 200 people go through the doors of the eatery every day and about half are paying; the other half are getting a free meal.

“An integral part of the community. Both for the people who live in this area and those who don’t. It is a really safe space for people to be able to come to have a meal interact with others get the support they need from the community and you know make sure the people are looked after,” said Darcie Daines.

The 541 eatery and Exchange is also looking for more volunteers, for more information you can check out their website.
