It’s the long Labour Day weekend with Monday being marked as a day to celebrate workers.
Some services and stores will be closed or will change their operating hours, while others will stay open.
Here’s a look at what’s open and closed in Hamilton this long weekend.
Groceries, alcohol and shopping
Big box stores like Walmart, Food Basics and Fortinos will have some locations closed on Monday.
Most locations for Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall will be closed while some will open on Monday.
The Hamilton Farmers’ Market will be closed Monday and will reopen Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
LCBO stores will be closed on Labour Day but The Beer Store is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
It’s best to double check your stores hours before you decide to go there.
Temporary road closure for Labour Day Parade
The following closures will be in effect from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday for the Labour Day parade.
- Bay Street, Strachan Street to York Boulevard.
- York Boulevard, Bay Street to James Street.
- James Street, York Boulevard to Strachan Street.
- Strachan Street, James Street to Bay Street.
HSR, ATS-DARTS and GO Transit
HSR will be operating on a Sunday schedule during Labour Day and DARTS will operate on a holiday schedule.
All subscription trips on DARTS are cancelled for the day except for dialysis. Anyone who needs to travel will need to make an advanced reservation.
ATS customer service will also be closed on Monday.
GO Transit is running on a Sunday schedule for Labour Day.
Hamilton museums, art galleries and library
Hamilton Civic Museums will be closed on Monday, but the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The city’s art gallery, the Tropical Greenhouse at Gage Park and all library branches will be closed Monday.
Recreation centres and arenas
All City of Hamilton recreation centres and arenas will be closed on Monday.
Outdoor pools will be open for regular hours on Monday.
City offices, Ontario Works and Service Canada
All administrative offices will be shut down Monday and will reopen on Tuesday. Service Canada will be closed too. The Ontario Works Offices located at 1550 Upper James St. and 250 Main St. E. will be closed on Monday.
The city says anyone wishing to report emergencies involving roads, water mains, sewer systems and safety issues should call 905-546-2489.
Canada Post
All offices will be closed on Monday.
Animal Services
The city’s animal services office and shelter will be closed on Monday.

Garbage and recycling
There will be no green cart, blue box, bulk waste, yard waste, or garbage pickup on Monday.
Pickup for the week will happen one day later and waste must be at the curb by 7 a.m.
Community recycling and transfer stations will also be closed on Monday.
