Residents can return to Chedoke trail area, police say, while search continues for shooting suspect

Police continue to investigate an early-morning shooting on Hamilton’s west Mountain area, but are leaving the area of the Chedoke Radial Trail, where they were searching for a second suspect.

The suspect has not been located but “normal activity can resume” near the trails, police said Thursday afternoon.

The shooting sent a 38-year-old man to hospital, police said. They responded to a 911 call Thursday morning from someone who had been shot near Mohawk Road W. and Juanita Drive around 7:30 a.m., Det.-Sgt. Steve Bereziuk said in a video posted on social media site X earlier in the day.

The victim has non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition, Bereziuk said.

Police arrested a 17-year-old male nearby and recovered a gun and stolen SUV, they said.

The 17-year-old faces several charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm and discharge firearm with intent.

The search for the second person connected to the incident initially led police to the Chedoke Radial Trail area, near the golf course, where police asked residents to avoid for several hours. The service previously said its Emergency Response Team, K9 unit, Halton Police and Ontario Provincial Police were involved in the search.

By early afternoon, police said they were leaving the area.

“The investigation is ongoing as police continue efforts to identify the second suspect involved in the shooting,” a news release said Thursday afternoon.
