Niagara police share name of woman 3½ months after she was killed in Smithville home

Niagara police have shared the name of a 62-year-old woman killed in her home in Smithville more than three months after her death.

The police service says officers found Cathy Prosje dead inside her home near Lindan Street and Alma Drive on April 26 at 12:33 p.m.

In May, police said the killing wasn’t random and didn’t share her name “as there is not an investigative reason to do so.”

Police spokesperson Stephanie Sabourin told CBC Hamilton, in an email, police are now sharing Prosje’s name after speaking with her family.

“Identifying a victim is often part of the ongoing investigation and is done in consultation with detectives and immediate family based upon the circumstances of the specific incident,” Sabourin wrote.

Sabourin added police are still investigating the killer’s motive.

Officers are looking to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Prosje before her death.

They are also looking for her laptop, which officers say “may have been discarded, traded, sold, or at local pawn shops.”

It’s described as a Hewlett Packard Elite Book 840 G9 Notebook, silver with a 14-inch screen, with serial number 5CG3106K1J. A search of the serial number shows a warranty on the computer started in March 2023.

Police say whoever has that laptop should call police.
